Beaches

Playa Puerto de San Miguel

Puerto de San Miguel beach with kayaks and pedal boats

Most staying or visiting here will go to the Playa Puerto de San Miguel. It is easy to reach. Sheltered by the bay, it generally has few waves, making it suitable for families with small children. Also, the shallow water helps. There are a few beach bars here, and renting kayaks or pedal boats is possible.

Cala de sa Ferradura

Cala de Sa Ferradura seen from a distance

If you want a change of scenery, the Cala de sa Ferradura is just a few hundred meters across the bay. You can walk there, swim (if you are a strong swimmer) or take a pedal boat or kayak that you can rent on the beach. This is also a great place to bring your snorkelling gear. In the bay, there is lots of sealife, but close to the main beach, they get scared away. Here a bit further out in the bay, you are much more likely to see fascinating fish and sea life.

Where to stay in Puerto de San Miguel

Siau Ibiza Hotel

This area is pretty tiny, so it does not matter so much the location of where you book. Just make sure you book in Puerto de San Miguel and not San Miguel, as many people use these interchangeably, and San Miguel is several kilometres up the mountain and inland. Even the cliffside hotels in the bay against the mountain have easy paths to get you to the beach and town quickly.

Here are 2 places you can book today and know for sure you made a great choice:

  • Balansat Resort: Family-friendly hotel with entertainment close to the beach with playgrounds and separate kids’ pools and adults-only pool
  • Siau Ibiza Hotel:  Luxury adults-only hotel close to the beach

Things to do in Puerto de San Miguel

  • Can Marca Caves: Cave with a light show, guided tours, and mixed opinions about it. If you just want to see something nice, it is nice, but the whole story about smugglers is a bit farfetched and a mix of legend and fact. But makes it more fun for the kids.
  • Benirras: This is a nearby beach with bohemian vibes. Each day during the season, there is also a market with clothing and crafts. On Sunday, there is also the famous bohemian sunset drumming session with dozens of participants.
  • Hiking: Since there is so much nature in this area of Ibiza, there are also a few hiking routes here. These take you along the coastline and some secluded swimming spots.
  • Horse riding: Because of the nature in this area, it is also an excellent sport with excursions offered nearby.
  • Watersports: Kayaks, pedal boats and paddleboards can be rented here.
  • Snorkelling: Because of the secluded location, shallow waters and waves in the bay, this is an excellent place for snorkelling.
  • Es Portixol: This cove is an excellent destination for adventure seekers. It requires quite a bit of hiking for those looking for a unique experience away from tourism; this is it.

These are things you can do in or close to Puerto de San Miguel. For a full list of things to see and do in Ibiza, have a look here.

Restaurants, bars and nightlife

There are only about 5 restaurants in Puerto de San Miguel, so choice and variety is limited. Luckily there is at least one restaurant catering to every price class. A taxi ride to San Miguel town is easy and fast if you want more restaurants. However, if you like to eat out daily, this place might not be ideal for you.

Nightlife is minimal as most places close before midnight. A few stay open till after midnight.

Most people visit Puerto de San Miguel for the beach holiday. If you are one of them, it is best to visit from June to September when the weather is best, and everything is open. May and October in this part of Ibiza often have very budget-friendly deals. But know that especially during the first weeks of May and last weeks of October, this area can feel a bit empty with some restaurants, bars and hotels closed. Also, since this is located in the North of Ibiza, this area gets a bit more rain than the rest of the island during rainy months.
