Playa de la Arena

Beaches

Black sand on the Playa la Arena beach

Playa la Arena is part of a larger resort, including Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes, so it has many different beaches within walking distance.  The beach at Playa La Arena is a lovely black sand beach; it’s a unique experience. It’s a bit nestled between two small cliffs, so it stays protected from most strong winds.  There are also other small beaches in the area that are for most within walking distance that you might want to look at during your holiday for a bit of change of scenery.

Hotels

  • Landmar Playa la Arena is great for those who like to spend a lot of time during their holiday on the beach.
  • Landmar Costa Los Gigantes is a large hotel with amazing views over the surrounding area and lots of fun play and climbing things for children. Both of these also share a very well-equipped playground and children’s club.

Nightlife

Sports bar at night in Playa la Arena

Playa la Arena has a nice strip near the front of the beach where you will find most of the nightlife in the evening.  But don’t expect any clubbing here; it’s mostly some chill bars with karaoke and live performances. Most of them are very family-friendly or family-oriented as well.

If you are not sure Playa de la Arena is suitable for you, look at my where to stay in Tenerife guide.

Restaurants & bars

You will find restaurants and bars on the main strip next to the beach. Unfortunately, there isn’t that much choice here as many of the hotels offer all-inclusive and many people choose to eat in the hotel.  If you can’t find what you want, you will find many more restaurants on the way to the Puerto de Santiago area. One place to check out is the Fishermans Inn next to the Playa Chica beach.  It’s a little bit away from the crowds in a charming place overlooking the Playa Chica beach.

Things to do near Playa de la Arena

Playa de la Arena is an excellent quiet location and not so busy as most other holiday destinations in the South of Tenerife. Because of this, most of the attractions and things to see are in the South and a bit away from here. So my advice would be to rent a car as I did. Like this, you can visit all these places like Siam Water Park, Teide and some of the beautiful things there are to see in the mountains very quickly while still enjoying the lower prices and more quiet location that is Playa de la Arena.

If you are not renting a car, then definitely have a walk over to the Los Gigantes beach, where you will find many unique things and places to swim along the way. Also, the harbour area is right next to it where you can go on many dolphin and whale watching excursions.
