Secluded beaches

Playa de Famara beach is very popular with surfers and windsurfers. It’s also a great place to stop while driving to the more popular excursions on the island like the Jameos del Agua, Cueva de Los Verdes and Mirador del Rio.  If you stay in the Costa Teguise, it is close by, just 15 minutes by car.  It is a bit further and harder to get to from other places on the island like Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca but still worth it.  My only advice is to check the weather if you are going here as it is often very windy here.  People have even built little shelters on the beach to be out of the wind.

Famara Beach

By far, one of the most secluded beaches has to be the Playa de las Conchas. It is located on the La Graciosa island, just next to Lanzarote. It’s a beautiful white sandy beach.  A bit smaller and also on this island is the Playa Montana Amarilla, a kind of mini secluded beach next to the Montana Amarilla and also one of the most challenging beaches to get to in Lanzarote.

Playa Papagayo is one of the more well-known tourist attractions in Lanzarote.  Most people go here when the weather is excellent, but I would advise you to go when the weather is not.  Sounds strange? Well, if the weather is great and sunny, everyone goes here, and the beach gets too busy and just not nice. But, on the other hand, if the weather is a bit more chilly and windy, not many people go here. But since the location of the Playa Papagayo is basically in a mini valley, you have a little microclimate here sheltered from the wind and just filled with sun.

Playa Papagayo

If the Playa Papagayo is too busy, there are also many other beaches just next to it you can enjoy like the Playa del Pozo, the first one when walking from Playa Blanca, the Playa de la Cera, Playa del Congrio and Playa Puerto Muelas. Just be informed f you are coming here by car, there is a 3 euro toll, cash only, no cards… so be prepared.  I usually do everything by card and rarely have cash on me, so luckily, I found some coins in a bag I had with me.

If you are coming from Playa Blanca, the road is not so long, but if you come from Costa Teguise of Puerto del Carmen area and follow the GPS, they will typically send you over a very long bad gravel road. So it is better first to navigate Iberostar La Bocayna Village and from there on follow the road to Playa Papagayo as it will be much less driving on bad roads. Also, from Sandos Papagayo, there is a walking road to Playa Blanca for those who prefer to walk.

Caleton Blanco is one of these beaches that looks amazing on recoloured pictures and is often found in holiday guides for this reason.  If you are looking for a secluded beach, this is a great beach in the North of the island, away from all the tourism. However, if you are looking for something spectacular and beautiful, this scores only 5 out of 10. So my advice would be unless you are passing here, not worth the detour.

Beaches in Costa Teguise

Playa las Cucharas is the main beach in Costa Teguise.  It’s big and most sheltered from the wind, which can sometimes be a bit of a problem in Lanzarote.  Next to the beach, you will find all the restaurants, bars, and shops ideal for families with small children.

Playa las Cucharas

Just a bit away from Playa las Cucharas is the Playa del Jablillo, still close to everything but usually a bit less crowded than the beach of Playa las Cucharas.

Playa del Jablillo

The Playa Bastian is on the outskirts of Costa Teguise and, therefore, is usually the least crowded in this area. There is also a nice restaurant next to this beach with impressive views, both popular day and nighttime. Unfortunately, I did not have time to eat here, but reviews online were good, the food looked good, and diners seemed to enjoy their experience.

Beaches in Puerto del Carmen

The Playa Grande beach in Puerto del Carmen is the biggest and best known in Lanzarote. It’s a great beach to visit with the family or with young children. Around this beach, you will find all services like bars, restaurants and shops.  If you are staying here till the evening, there are also many restaurants to enjoy.

Playa Grande

Playa de Los Pocillos is very much like the Playa Blanca, just with much fewer bars and restaurants next to it. Unfortunately, the beach here usually gets much more wind, so it is possibly not the best choice unless your hotel is right next to it.

Playa de los Pocillos

Playa Chica is located next to the Playa Grande but a bit out of sight.  If you are looking for something smaller in this area, this beach is just a 2-minute walk away.  Because it is a bit out of sight, it often gets less crowded than the main beach.

Playa Lima is in the Matagorda area of Puerto del Carmen, especially popular for people watching the planes in this area. It’s a thing to do to stand under the planes here while they are landing next to the beach, but they don’t fly over the beach.  The beach is nothing special, but kids seem to have fun with the planes here. Next to the beach, you will find a few restaurants and bars.

Beaches in Playa Blanca

In Playa Blanca, you will find 3 great beaches.  First is the Playa Blanca beach, the more extensive beach in this area, then there is also the Playa Flamingo and further out the Playa de Montana Roja beach.

Playa Dorada

The sings at the Playa de Montana Roja beach make some people believe it is part of the hotel, but beaches in Spain are never private, so it is free to use by anyone. Just the sunbeds here are part of the hotel and therefore only for use by hotel guests.  There is a nice small bar here, a great place to have a drink and relax if you are walking here from the Playa Blanca.  If you want to get away from busy and crowded in the high seasons, Playa de Montana Roja in this area might be your best bet.

Most beautiful beaches

You would not normally suspect to find the nicest beaches in the busy capital, but in the Canary Islands, that nearly seems to be a rule for some reason. So if you are looking for lovely clean white sands and crystal clear water, then a visit to the Playa del Reducto in Lanzarote might be your best choice.  This area does not see many tourists and is also pretty cheap to eat and drink next to the beach.

Playa Papagayo I would also advise any time except during peak season on Lanzarote as it might get overcrowded. However, this is a must-see when it is not that busy, but temperatures are still nice to enjoy in the winter season.
